Visit, stay & Make
From night to day, TOINO ABEL’s workspace has transformed since 2013 and continues to evolve. When Nuno moved to the countryside, he started working on his great aunt's baskets in his grandfather's garage during the summer and in his living room during the first winters. Today, that garage has become one of Portugal’s acclaimed basketry ateliers, housing every process step, including the weaving on our manual wooden looms.
The workshop is located on a larger property with a spacious garden, shared by the private family house and a guest house—a 1945 building constructed using traditional techniques and local materials. The house has been carefully rehabilitated to offer a peaceful retreat, a pause from the hustle of city life for those seeking solitude, a space to focus on creative work, or a place for friend gatherings and family bonding.
Together, the workshop and guest house create the perfect setting for those who want to get hands-on with the basket weaving process—whether they’re professionals, enthusiastic amateurs, or families looking for a fun and meaningful activity. Our team will guide you closely through the process, making it an ideal experience for both learning and bonding.
Visit
TOINO ABEL’s workshop is located in the birthplace of Portuguese soft-rush basketry, near giant waves in Meca Nazaré, Portugal. Here, we honor traditional skills and emphasize collective welfare. We handle every step in-house, from cutting the rushes to weaving on our looms, which are one-of-a-kind in this field.
Our workshop is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM. Walk-ins are allowed, but we suggest making an appointment. You can observe our crafting process, see current and past projects, and buy items on-site during your visit. Some items may be reserved or out of stock; we accept cash and card payments.
We typically close in mid-to-late August and during Christmas and New Year's. Please be aware that the workshop can be completely chaotic during your visit, but we do our best to welcome guests.
STAY
Nestled on the same property as TOINO ABEL’s studio, Santa Marta Cottage is a cherished family treasure. Built by Nuno’s grandfather in 1945 with his own hands, it was his lifelong home—a place filled with memories and heart. Today, it welcomes guests as a warm and inviting retreat, surrounded by a spacious garden, friendly animals, and the serene charm of the Portuguese countryside.
Ideally located in Portugal's central and coastal region, the cottage is surrounded by iconic landmarks, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Monastery of Alcobaça, Portugal’s first grand Gothic monument; the flamboyant Gothic Monastery of Batalha celebrated for its “imperfect” Manueline chapels; and the Convent of Christ in Tomar, a historic seat of the Templar Order.
Other nearby attractions include the medieval town of Óbidos, Leiria Castle, and some of the region’s most beautiful beaches, from Nazaré’s world-famous waves to quieter, family-friendly shores to other wild and desert sands. For those seeking tranquillity, the surrounding countryside offers scenic paths ideal for peaceful walks and reflection.
Santa Marta Cottage retains its traditional charm and simplicity with thick stone walls and wooden details, providing a comfortable stay for up to four guests. It features two cosy bedrooms, a welcoming living room with a fireplace, and an open kitchen. An additional room offers versatility, serving as an office for remote working, a creative studio, a yoga space, or a children’s play area. Outside, the spacious garden, barbecue area, and wooden sauna create the ideal environment for unwinding.
As a guest, you’ll enjoy a 20% discount on TOINO ABEL purchases and a unique opportunity to connect with the artistry of basketry—a meaningful way to engage with the region’s rich heritage.
Make
What could be more meaningful than understanding a craft through your own hands?
At TOINO ABEL, we aim to preserve, share, and celebrate the ancient art of soft-rush Portuguese basketry. The best way to achieve this is by passing on the knowledge we've gathered to those eager to expand their skills and explore this unique craft.
Our workshops are designed for both professionals and the general public. Whether you are an artist, an artisan, or a family looking for a creative bonding experience, we provide personalized guidance to help you fully immerse yourself in this beautiful tradition.
Workshops generally last a minimum of two days, with more complex projects taking anywhere from one to three weeks. To ensure individual attention, we accept only one application at a time and have a maximum of four participants. We welcome individuals of all ages, with a minimum age requirement of five. All materials are included, and each participant will leave with their creation—an heirloom to treasure for years to come.
While participants are not required to stay at Santa Marta Guest House, which is located on the same property, the proximity of the two places makes it an ideal setting for immersing yourself in the creative process.
