To find out the right fabric, together with the threads and other materials…to place the pattern properly, cutting it, to sewing the pieces, and then watch how, little by little, my hands joining under the sewing machine becomes that “something” that I was expecting so anxious in order to be able to wear it. "Das Bastkörbeflechten hat zwar eine lange Tradition, findet inzwischen aber bei den meisten Produktionsstätten nicht mehr statt, denn besonders wirtschaftlich ist es halt nicht, jeden Halm per Hand zu bleichen, zuzuschneiden, nachzufärben, zu hübschen Körben zu verarbeiten und dann auch noch aus Weidenzweigen einen Griff dranzufriemeln. Dass die Henkeltaschen von Toino Abel trotzdem mit dieser ursprünglichen Methode produziert werden, haben wir dem Portugiesen Nuno Henriques zu verdanken, dessen Urgroßvater besagte Technik entwickelt und perfektioniert hat. "Nuno, when did you start your label "Toino Abel"?
For me it all started in 2010, on the night when my grandfather died. My family came together for dinner in the house of my great grandaunt who was running the basket business founded by my great great grandfather. At the end of the night my brother gave one of the traditional reed baskets to his new girlfriend. For me it was like a gesture. His girlfriend took the basket home as a memory, as something that was created here in the village. And this made me think that I could do the same, just on a larger scale. (…)

"Back in the day, Nuno Henriques‘s great-grandfather was the reed basket king of Castanheira, Portugal. His workshop employed a whole mob of makers who stuck to traditional techniques: cutting reeds by hand, dyeing them over a woodfire, then weaving everything together on a hand loom. Four generations on things are done pretty much the same with Nuno overseeing the last remaining traditional basket crafters as they go about their business of making awesome stuff."
